Silk Base Closures Vs. Lace Closures

Updated: Dec 27, 2019

When it comes to wearing weaves and hair extensions, the goal should always be to obtain a natural appearance. No one deliberately wants their weave to be easily detected, which is why many installations require leaving hair out in the front to seamlessly cover the tracks. But with this weaving method comes the hassle of blending your own hair with the texture of the hair extensions.

Many times in order to be successful at the blending process, constant heat is being applied and the risk of intense heat damage is high. But thanks to closures – a small hair unit used to cover the front of the hair where you would normally leave hair out – your installation will be flawless with the appearance of a natural hairline. Isn’t it amazing that you can wear natural-looking hair extensions without causing damage to your hair?

Closures come in a couple of distinct bases: lace and silk. Both hair additions may be sewn down or attached by adhesive and tape. Although the methods of attachment are similar, each base is uniquely different. Which base will give you the best overall result?

Below are a few factors to consider as a guide when going through the lace and silk base selection process.

SILK BASE CLOSURES (also known as Silk Top Closures) are manufactured with hair strands embedded into a nude, skin-like silk material which is usually supported with lace.

ADVANTAGES: Silk base closures have a tendency to last much longer in addition to usually don’t call for bleaching unlike lace closures. Entirely due to the silk fabric backing on the closure, the knots are not detectable and so imitate the scalp without considerable changes.

CHALLENGES: Despite the fact that the silk component helps to conceal the knots to provide a natural scalp appearance, all scalps are not created the same. If you are of deeper skin tone with a significantly darker scalp, it is advisable to alter and even tint your silk base. Also, this style of closure usually is a bit thicker, which may represent as a challenge with achieving an extremely flat install.

LACE CLOSURES are constructed by ventilating individual strands of onto a lace foundation.

ADVANTAGES: It gives a scalp-like appearance whenever it is positioned against your skin or next to the natural scalp. In addition, it assures an exceptionally flat and effortless installation which will make your overall hairstyle look incredibly real.

CHALLENGES: To achieve the best results, the lace closure will require some tweaking. The dot matrix (the tiny black dot pattern that is created when the hair strands are embedded into the sheer lace) will be visible when placed against your skin, therefore it is best to bleach the knots in your closure eliminate the grid-like effect of the matrix.

Bleached knots will simulate the individual strands of hair growing directly from your scalp. If your closure is not bleached correctly, you risk wasting your money by ruining lace and the hair. On the other hand, foundation or concealer may be added to the lace to enhance the natural appearance.
