BEST SOLUTION TO COVER THINNING EDGES
Tired of your thinning edges? Is your thinning hairline preventing you from enjoying a variety of hairstyles? Do you often conform to wearing the same daily hairstyle because you feel that there are no other options for you?
I am sure that you have experimented with many different products that promise to “quickly” restore your edges only to find out that many of them work slowly and at times may not be able to correct your current situation.
We created a simple tutorial that will present a temporary fix to remedy your thinning hairline. No need avoid certain hairstyles because this method may be sewn into the hair as well as attached with wig adhesive. Explore this new alternative to achieve the most natural looking hairline for thinning edges!
WHAT IS A POSTICHE?
Postiche, or hairpiece, is a term used to describe false hair components which vary from wigs, toupees, customized hairpieces and facial pieces such as: sideburns, moustaches and beards. Postiche pieces are often used in stage and television to dramatically transform the appearance of the character.
The method of creating a postiche is often repetitive and demands proficiency and attention to detail. It will involve knotting individual strands of hair onto a net-like material as a way to generate a natural-looking hairpiece.
BASIC SUPPLIES NEEDED:
Canvas Head or Wig Block
Black Permanent Marker
Clear Packaging Tape
Straight Pins
Sewing Needle (Hair) and Thread*
THINNING HAIRLINE
Style the hair to prepare for the template. Lay the hair totally flat in order to expose the thinning area.
CREATING THE PATTERN FOR THE EDGE POSTICHE
Apply the cling wrap around the head and completely cover the affected area. Once covered, tear or cut the cling wrap off the roll. (If assistance is needed, your client will be able to help you hold the cling wrap in place when covering the head.)
Use a black permanent marker to trace the area. Pay close attention to the direction of the hair at the hairline. Apply clear tape over the pattern to make it firm. Be sure to completely cover the entire pattern with tape before moving to the next step.
TRIMMING THE EDGE POSTICHE TEMPLATE
Carefully remove the pattern from your client’s head. Trim the pattern to create a template of the thinning area. Trim 1/2 inch below the outlined area. (You will pin this area later.)
BLOCKING THE EDGE POSTICHE TEMPLATE
–> If you require a dark background to increase your visibility while ventilating, now is the time to add the tape to your wig head. (Many wigmakers prefer to use dark green or blue tape.)<–
Place the template on a canvas block or wig head. Attach the template to the wig head using clear packaging tape. Carefully apply the tape along the perimeter of the template.
WIG LACE FOUNDATION
Place your selection of wig lace over the template as a guide to measure the amount of lace required for the task. Cut away enough lace to fully cover the template.
Please note that tinting your lace may be required to best match your client’s skin complexion. If so, tinting the wig lace may be done by using Rit dye or black tea.
The wig lace that you select is very important. It should be durable enough to withstand styling, application and removal, but also be transparent enough to blend with the hairline.
Great wig lace selections include Film lace, Vaniss HD lace, Swiss Lace and Opera wig lace.
If your client’s hair is extremely course and thick, a stronger foundation may be required. Ex. German lace.
Apply the wig lace foundation over the template. Insert straight pins 1/2 inch below the outline. Each inserted pin should be spaced approximately 1/8 inches apart. Ensure that the wig lace is pulled taut with “slight” flexibility. (Lace that is applied loosely will cause your hair ventilating needle to snag.)
CHOOSING THE RIGHT TYPE OF HAIR FOR YOUR HAIRPIECE
Once the template is secured. Select the hair that will be used to create your hairpiece. Select human hair that best matches your client’s color, density and texture. For this demonstration, our model wanted to use her natural hair so that the end product would have very realistic results.
THE PROCESS OF HAIR VENTILATION
Pinch a small piece of hair from your drawing mat and pull it away slowly to prevent grabbing more than what is needed. During the hair ventilation process, knot the hair in the appropriate direction. Single, double and split knots may be used to ventilate the postiche, but always use only a single strand at the hairline. This will result in the most natural appearance.
PRE-STYLING THE HAIRPIECE
Once the hairpiece is fully ventilated, it is ready for pre-styling. This is may include flat-ironing the hair or slightly trimming the hair.
REMOVING THE HAIRPIECE
Trim the excess wig lace. Carefully unpin the hairpiece using needle-nose pliers or the sharp edge of your scissors. Be mindful NOT to rip or puncture the lace.
Administer a dry-fitting by placing the postiche against the client’s thinning area to check for accuracy. At this time, examine the overall appearance. If hair must be added or removed to achieve the desired look, go back to step #7.
INSTALLAION OF THE EDGE HAIRPIECE
The postiche may be applied with the use of lace wig adhesive or Got2B Glued. The hairpiece may also be sewn into client’s hair by creating anchor braids and applying a net over the thinning area.
